Job description

As a Second Officer on general cargo vessels, you are responsible for navigation and the operations on board. Under the leadership of the Chief Officer and in close cooperation with the Master, you are co-responsible for supervising the work on deck and assisting with loading and unloading the cargo. You ensure effective and efficient operations on the vessel.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Navigate and assist in maneuvering the vessel under the guidance of the Chief Officer and the Master.
  • Perform watch duties, both at sea and in port, directly reporting to the Chief Officer.
  • Support in coordinating deck operations, including maintenance work and conducting safety drills.
  • Oversee the implementation of safety procedures and train junior deck personnel in maritime skills and safety awareness.
  • Maintain navigation and communication equipment onboard, under the responsibility of the Chief Officer.
  • Contribute to voyage planning and checking weather forecasts and ship documentation.

Job requirements

  • Valid STCW certificates, including a valid competency certificate as Second Officer.
  • At least 1 year of experience on sea-going ships, preferably in a similar role.
  • Excellent navigation skills and a thorough knowledge of maritime safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience in handling navigation and communication equipment.
  • Good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • A team player with a proactive and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Able to work under pressure and respond adequately in emergency situations. 

Job requirements may differ per client/vessel! The above is expected of every Second Officer who starts working through Oceanwide.
