Damen

Posted on: March 30 2026

We offer you an Ocean of Possibilities. Join our family.

About us

Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam is part of the Damen Shiprepair and Conversion group. A division that focuses on repair, maintenance, refit and conversion of various types of ships across a wide range of markets such as Offshore oil & gas, installation vessels for wind turbines, Navy and Transport. The organization is characterized by modern business operations in which the customer is central and we can respond efficiently on fluctuating market conditions and operate in a demand-driven supply chain.

The role

The Project Estimator (or Cost Engineer) is part of a team of 5-8 Estimators led by a Team Leader within the Sales Department.

We have a very driven team of estimators who all have a passion for ships, numbers and technology. They will be happy to show you our premises, share their knowledge and experience and welcome you at our yard.

This technical-commercial function is aimed at determining the cost price of maritime projects as accurately as possible, the basis of the cost will be the information supplied by the customer. This cost price calculation is used as a basis to determine the correct sales price and project lead time. The budget calculation is also a starting point for the preparation and the actual assignment execution. The Estimating Department ensures that project considerations are based on the best possible data / calculations, this in order to both increase the chance of getting projects awarded and decrease the chance of accepting loss-making projects. The ship repair market is characterized by limited predictability. For example, the scope of activities between the initial assessment of applications to completion can differ greatly. Properly recording/describing the work offered, often in English, is an important point in creating a risk-averse quote.

Key accountabilities

  • Independently draw up quotations for repair, regular maintenance, conversions and construction works. You do this on the basis of the data, such as technical specification and drawings, issued by our customers. You analyze and assess this data and you consult with the customer to get a clear picture of the requested scope of work.

  • You work closely with the purchasing department, subcontractors and suppliers in order to draw up an optimal total budget taking into account vessels arrival date, planning and delivery times.

  • You participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits as required which may result in travel time on occasion in the Netherland and abroad.

  • Makes timely, accurate and complete cost calculations, including a correct formulation of the technical specifications.

  • Collect tender documents where appropriate based on the specifications and (working) drawings supplied by the customer. Prepares a counter specification if necessary.

  • Plans own work, monitors the realization of agreements on the delivery of calculations and other deliverables.

  • Provides, if desired or requested by the customer, a project planning based on the work offered in our quotation.

  • Occasional provision of preliminary / basic engineering data to support the quotation. This in collaboration with our colleagues from the work preparation and production department.

  • Must be constantly aware of new developments and activities in his field and field of work (both in terms of calculation and ship repair).

  • Consults internal files with key figures and standards. Requests timely quotes from suppliers and subcontractors.

  • If necessary, visit ships for inspecting the works in the Netherlands and abroad to obtain additional information and to assess the specification and technical data. Contributes to consultations with the customer in which the scope, technical (im)possibilities and customer wishes are discussed. Contributes his expertise and strives for a complete quote. Prepares (final) budget.

Skills & experience

  • Higher or secondary technical education level with affinity both commercial and technical, e.g.: Engineering, Shipbuilding, Technical Business Administration or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of estimating and cost structures or be willing to learn this.

  • You're flexible, accurate and a team player.

  • Your English, verbally and written, is proficient.

  • Knowledge of MS Excel, MS Projects and other relevant software.

  • Used to working in teams, with a service providing and flexible attitude.

  • We expect candidates to have knowledge of the ship repair market and ship repair techniques or be willing to learn this. Several years of experience in this industry or a relevant position is an advantage.

  • Broad technical knowledge is of course also essential. A mechanical or naval engineering background would be a good fit. The professional we are looking for preferably has experience in the estimation of maritime projects or comes from a technical environment with common ground for this position.
