We offer you an Ocean of Possibilities. Join our family.

You think ship design is routine? Think again.

At Damen Engineering Gdańsk, we work on some of the most exciting projects on the market. Drone carriers? We’ve got them. Tugs? Of course. From barges and offshore service vessels like CSOVs and walk-to-work ships, all the way to advanced navy platforms — this is where the future of shipbuilding is shaped.

As Damen Engineering Gdańsk we are set up to be involved into the engineering process from the moment when an idea is generated by the client to the vessel delivery. We are responsible for transforming the initial design into a complete and practicable engineering package.

We offer you an Ocean of Possibilities. Are you ready to try?

The Systems Engineer role (structure/strengh calculations/stability experience)

We’re looking for a Systems Engineer who sees the vessel as a whole, not just one piece.

You’ll fit if you have a broad knowledge of shipbuilding and are eager to design and develop systems for vessels — from construction and mechanics to electrical, automation, and navigation systems. If you have experience in designing technical systems, can combine knowledge from various fields of engineering, and want to have a real impact on the quality of projects – this offer is for you.

We are looking for an experienced engineer responsible for designing and supervising design processes, with experience and knowledge at engineering shipbuilding projects. In this role, you will be responsible for planning, implementing, supervising, and verifying work, as well as evaluating the quality of design solutions to ensure that the project meets client requirements, classification regulations, and applicable quality and regulatory standards.

Key accountabilities

  • Designing and supervising by focusing on structural of vessels to ensure that designs comply with client requirements, classification regulations, and quality and regulatory standards.
  • Creating design solutions that address complex and unique problems, requiring the integration of knowledge from various engineering fields, interpreting client requirements, classification standards, and implementing design solutions in a multidisciplinary and dynamic environment.
  • Solving interdisciplinary engineering problems, assessing technical risks, and optimizing solutions in terms of cost, functionality, safety, and compliance with classification regulations.
  • Performing, supervising, and verifying design calculations.
  • Creating and approving functional descriptions of systems. Developing lists, registers, summaries, documents, and technical reports. Creating and supervising 3D models of floating units.
  • Preparing test plans (FAT, HAT, SAT).

Skills & experience

  • Higher technical education (preferred: Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in ship/offshore systems projects.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAE tools, MS Project.
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex technical problems.
  • Independence in making design and technical decisions.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and openness to acquiring knowledge beyond the scope.
  • Good command of the English language at B2 level (written and verbal);
  • Polish language communication proficiency at least C1 is a must.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES — STRUCTURE (3D MODELING & PRODUCTION ENGINEERING)

  • Knowledge of structural joints and typical ship structural solutions, with ability to design and apply them in practice.
  • 3D modeling of hull structures and foundations using: Cadmatic, NAPA Steel, Rhinoceros 3D (including modeling of elements such as hawse pipes, masts, hydrodynamic fairings, foundations, and integration of vendor equipment). bility to prepare detailed 2D foundation plans, including integration of equipment such as cranes, azimuth thrusters, tunnel thrusters, gangway towers, stern gates, ramps, drop keels, and others.
  • Preparation of reports: weight reports, centers of gravity, material take‑offs, procurement lists. Preparation of documentation such as Welding Tables, Tank Pressure & Structural Plans, NDT Plans, Tank Boards.
  • Understanding of steel material categories and strength parameters, with the ability to apply them according to classification requirements. Knowledge of ship structural mechanics, particularly the function of structural members in load distribution. Understanding of ship‑structure production technology and the ability to apply this knowledge in design.
  • Ability to prepare technical structural plans (GCP) according to drawing standards.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES — STABILITY

  • Mass, Geometry & Hydrostatics: Estimation of lightweight ship mass at concept stage based on reference vessels. Preparation of main‑dimension variants with respect to payload, buoyancy, and stability criteria. Development of 2D drawings representing principal ship dimensions. Creation of theoretical hull lines for hydrostatic analyses and tank configuration work. Development of tank layout ensuring compliance with technical specifications, including 2D tank drawings.
  • Watertight Subdivision: Preparation of watertight bulkhead plans and collision bulkhead positioning. Development of watertight subdivision drawings and arrangement of non‑watertight elements. Optimization of watertight subdivision based on damage‑flooding analysis. Comparison of alternative tank arrangements and subdivision concepts.
  • Stability Calculations: Creation of a stability model based on the general arrangement and vessel geometry. Conducting intact stability calculations for defined loading conditions. Conducting damage stability calculations. Preparation of stability reports (intact & damage). Development of safety margin summaries for intact and damage stability. Creation of tank sounding tables based on approved tank arrangements. Preparation of input data for longitudinal strength calculations. Execution of an inclining experiment and preparation of the corresponding report (lightship weight & center of gravity).

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES — STRENGTH CALCULATION (STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS):

  • Structural Calculations & Load Assessment: ability to calculate geometric section parameters (neutral axis, moments of inertia, section moduli). Ability to perform analytical stress calculations for basic structural systems. Verification and documentation of stress types based on computational models. Creation of shear force and bending moment envelopes in line with project requirements.
  • Structural Assessment & Design: Selection of structural scantlings in accordance with project requirements. Assessment of hull structural strength based on design assumptions and requirements. Evaluation of component load‑carrying capacity and structural flexibility. Development of optimization proposals to improve strength, reduce weight, or lower cost.
  • Finite Element Method (FEM/MES): Development of global, local, and zonal FEM models. Execution and interpretation of FEM‑based strength analyses. Execution of local FEM analyses. Ability to perform non‑linear, dynamic, and thermal calculations. Ability to conduct fatigue analyses for ships and marine structures.
  • Specialized Engineering Calculations: Docking calculations and assessment of support reactions on hull structure. Lifting and transportation calculations for ships and marine structures.
