The Role

As a D&P Engineer you will focus on Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO). In close cooperation with the Account Manager Services, you will translates customer requirements into competitive MRO solutions. You assess technical scopes, vessel condition, and commercial drivers, then design proposals that balance feasibility and cost-effectiveness. Working together with Operations and Supply Chain, you validate technical details, estimate costs, and define schedules. After order intake, you ensure a smooth handover and stay involved during execution to capture lessons learned for future improvements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate closely with Account Management / Sales and the customer to understand technical and commercial drivers.
  • Balancing standard MRO service offerings with customer-specific requirements, ensuring proposals are technically sound, commercially competitive and executable.
  • Support the standardization and further development of MRO services, solutions and templates to improve efficiency, consistency and scalability within the Services portfolio.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain and subcontractors to define scopes of work, execution strategies, risk assessments and project assumptions.
  • Participate in tender teams and lead the technical content of proposals, including scope definitions, work breakdowns, execution concepts and clarifications during the tender phase.
  • Upon effective order, organize and execute the handover (kick-off) from D&P Services to Operations, ensuring a clear transfer of scope, assumptions, risks and commercial agreements.
  • Remain involved during project execution to support Operations with clarifications, capture lessons learned, and provide feedback to continuously improve future MRO proposals and service offerings  

Skills & Experience

We are looking for a Proposal Engineer who brings the following qualifications and experience:

  • Either of the following tertiary qualifications:
    Bachelor or BEngTech in Marine Engineering;
    BEng or BSc in engineering (electronic/mechatronic preferred, mechanical will be considered)
  • 3–7 years of proven experience in MRO, refit projects, or conversion projects in the maritime or offshore industry.
  • Proven experience in technical proposal, tendering, or project engineering roles.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into clear technical scopes and cost-effective MRO solutions. Balance technical feasibility with commercial competitiveness.
  • Experience estimating costs, labor, materials, lead times, and risks for repair, conversion, or construction projects.
  • Understanding of contractual, commercial, and risk considerations in maritime projects.
  • Practical knowledge of shipboard systems, including Electrical power generation and distribution, Automation and control systems, Integration of electrical and mechanical systems during refit or conversion projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proactive, structured, and capable of managing multiple proposals or tenders simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to interface effectively with technical specialists and commercial stakeholders.
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken (additional languages such as Dutch are a plus).
  • A South African Citizen currently residing in the Cape Town area.
